Burning Man Drone Show

In the middle of the Nevada desert, a temporary city rises every year: Black Rock City. Burning Man is one of the world's most radical experiences, a collision of art, technology, and boundless self-expression. SKD Drone had the chance to take that stage twice, turning the open desert sky into our canvas.

In this post, we're breaking down our Burning Man drone show projects: the formations we designed and the technical craft behind pulling off a show like this.

Why a Drone Show at Burning Man?

Burning Man's spirit is built around radical self-expression, art, and community. Unlike fireworks, drones are silent and offer near-limitless formation possibilities, which makes a drone light show a natural fit for Burning Man's philosophy. The sky becomes an unbounded canvas.

Two Shows, Dozens of Formations

Across two separate shows at Burning Man, the SKD Drone team flew hundreds of drones to bring the following formations to life in the night sky:

UFO: A mysterious spacecraft silhouette appearing over the desert, perfectly matching the surreal atmosphere of the festival.

Walking Rabbit: A frame-by-frame animation of a rabbit taking steps across the sky, clear proof that drones can go beyond static shapes and tell moving stories.

Robot: A massive robot figure rising over the desert, a nod to the technology behind the show itself.

Question Marks: Dozens of question marks lighting up the sky, a direct callback to Burning Man's spirit of curiosity and inquiry.

Alien Face: An instantly recognizable alien face formation that drew immediate reactions of surprise and delight from the crowd.

Dragon: A massive dragon gliding across the sky, one of the most visually striking and technically complex formations of the show.

Sphere: 1,000 drones aligning into a perfect 3D sphere, showcasing the precision and synchronization behind the system.

Alongside th

ese, we layered in abstract patterns, transition animations, and custom brand-specific figures to round out the show.

Behind the Scenes

Producing a drone light show takes more than it looks like from the ground. At SKD Drone, we fly our own proprietary system and design every formation in-house, which means faster turnaround and more creative freedom. And a show like this doesn't need much space to launch, so it can be staged almost anywhere: stadiums, deserts, beaches, or open fields.

From Burning Man to the World

Founded in 2017, SKD Drone has taken the experience earned on stages like Burning Man to events across the US and worldwide. We bring that same precision and creativity to weddings, festivals, corporate launches, and large-scale celebrations wherever the client needs us.
